Our History

The Montana Barnwood Brand dates back to the Fall of 2016 in a Greenhouse turned makeshift shop, located in Whitefish, Montana. Prior to opening the doors of the MB venture, Jason Bohnsack had been working in the Reclaimed Lumber business for several years while learning the ropes. After a short time in the trenches, he realized that not only did he enjoy the work, but that he was also proficient. With a history of working with his hands in different facets of the building trades and personal creative endeavors, he took to it rather quickly. Putting in long hard hours in the field, and analyzing processes, procedures, and business models in his spare time, his steps seemed to be moving him towards something bigger. Finally, after concluding his market research, he decided it was time for a new business to fill the gap, and provide a level of service that seemed to be lacking in The Flathead Valley.

With one lumber processing machine, some hand tools, and permission to use a friend’s greenhouse, “Montana Barnwood” opened for business.

After a season of typical NW Montana weather, processing lumber in a 1200 sq. ft. greenhouse (to build up some capital) it was time to pull the trigger on a more functional space. MB’s next step was to upgrade to a 3000 sq. ft. shop with a fenced yard just off Highway 2 in Columbia, Falls. What an awesome purchase it turned out to be. It had heat and everything! In the subsequent years, the word began to get out and materials were moving. Gratitude was and is a core value and the foundation of every phase of our development. Being in such a great location, that second building served the the community and the company well. Inventory was built up, extensive machinery was acquired, and the walls seemingly closed in. Once again, it had come time to start looking at other options. That space provided us three wonderful growth years, and just inevitably became outgrown. (A quality problem.)

Call it Kismet, Karma, Destiny… “Right Place-Right Time” whatever works for you, the right piece of land came on the market, and it was time to build the Dream Shop.

After the purchase of the property and locking in a phenomenal builder for the following summer, this 4200 Square Foot Pole Barn Style Shop would soon become the home of “Montana Barnwood” (reclaimed lumber, accent wall material, and processed sidings) as well as the creative makers’ space for Jason Bohnsack / “Big Sky Maker” (unique handmade creations comprised of limitless materials : wood, iron, leather, glass, resin…)

Adding his own sweat equity to the build, in order to keep costs down, he was able to assist in site prep, plumbing, and completely build out the interior. With plans to add additional features such as a product showroom, more material storage, and a handful of makers’ stations dedicated to specific tools of the trades, the Montana Barnwood and Big Sky Maker stories will continue to be written.

Since the inception of Montana Barnwood, Jason’s intention has always been to build a Brand that would offer a customer experience that he himself would appreciate if he were seeking similar products or services, and now at 70 Conestoga Court in the city of Kalispell, Montana 59901, Montana Barnwood is doing just that.
